‘Have
Resilience!’ Prime Minister Andrew Holness urges Jamaicans
On
Monday, October 30, 2023, sections of Jamaica were jolted by a magnitude
5.6 earthquake. In a press conference at
the Office of the Prime Minister, citizens were urged to be resilient in the
process of recovery.
Prime
Minister Andrew Holness began the press conference by speaking on the
significance of the earthquake as well as reports of damages. He stated that
though damages have been reported, it would only be considered minor damage. He
continued by acknowledging the psychological toll that the earthquake would
have had on citizens.
“Nevertheless, the experience has been very
traumatic, particularly for our young children who were in school at the time,”
he stated.
Furthermore,
he urged citizens to return to work so no further disruptions would hinder the
country's growth.
“Tomorrow
I want the country to come back to work,” said Holness.
He encouraged citizens, as they return to
work, they should also keep in mind measures that can be put in place in the
event of another earthquake. The prime minister also encouraged parents to talk
to their children about earthquake preparedness.
“ Now is a good time for parents to talk to
your children about what to do in the event of a disaster like an earthquake,” he
asserted.
He concluded by encouraging citizens not to
lose hope, as the government and public response are strong.
