Taxi operator killed, mother hospitalised
Taxi operator Gregory
Sutherland, otherwise called ‘Greg’ of Big Head Street in Greenvale Manchester
was shot dead and his mother wounded on Tuesday night.
Reports are that the
36-year-old and five of his relatives, including three children were on their
way home in his taxi at about 7:30 p.m, when two gunmen emerged from bushes and
opened fire at the vehicle.
The mother of the deceased
is currently hospitalised with bullet wounds but remains in stable condition. The other passengers
escaped injury. The gunmen attacked the family a few metres away from their home
in the Scott’s Town area in Greenvale.
“Two men jump out the
bush and shot out the tires first, so Greg couldn’t drive off. Then them open
fire on him in the driver’s seat. Him come out the car and all when him drop a
ground them still a shoot him,” said an eyewitness.
The Manchester police have
imposed a 48-hour curfew in the Greenvale community in response to the recent series
of violence in the area.
The curfew will begin at
6 p.m. Wednesday evening and is scheduled to end at 6 p.m. on Friday, October
13. The police say the recent spate of violence is attributable to
interpersonal disputes between rival gangsters.
This incident is the
fourth murder recorded in Manchester since the start of October.
