New Highway, New
Crash: A Cautionary Tale
Seven
days after the opening of the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of the Southern
Coastal Highway, a van overturned on the newly constructed thoroughfare,
narrowly avoiding the tragic loss of two lives. This incident serves as a stark
reminder that even the most well-designed roads can pose dangers if not used
responsibly.
Daryl
Vaz, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport, has
emphasised the importance of recognizing the responsibility that accompanies
these advancements. While the newly built highway aims to enhance connectivity,
it should not be seen as an invitation to engage in reckless driving.
The
statistics regarding road accidents in Jamaica are undeniably alarming. Every
year, countless individuals lose their lives or sustain serious injuries in
these accidents. The impact on affected families and communities is
devastating.
Moreover,
a total of 264 incidents have led to 284 traffic fatalities as of September 12,
2023. Despite the fact, this number is lower than last year's, it is
nonetheless concerning.
It
is the Minister's hope that by the end of the year, the number of fatalities
will be well below 400. However, this goal can only be achieved if all Jamaican
citizens commit to prioritising safe driving practices.
The
recent incident on the May Pen to Williamsfield Highway serves as a poignant
reminder that we must remain vigilant of the perils on the road, even on newly
constructed and well-maintained highways. Here are some crucial tips to ensure
road safety:
1.
Always adhere to the designated speed limits.
2.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
3.
Avoid distractions such as mobile phones and loud music.
4.
Stay attentive to your surroundings and be prepared to yield to pedestrians and
other vehicles.
5.
Be patient and extend courtesy to fellow drivers.
Let
us come together and actively contribute towards making Jamaica's roads safer
for the well-being of all.
